These hunts take place in the vast Bob Marshall Wilderness. On these traditional western hunts access is only by foot or horse/mule travel. During this time period game is on their summer range and is widely scattered creating a physically demanding hunt. The distance from the trailhead to our Ayres Creek camp is 17 miles, 6 hours of travel time. The habitat is ideal, about 80% mature timber and 20% recent burns. We have recently left an area which 90% plus was burned through a 29 year period. It just did not hold the elk. Bulls and timber go together like hand and glove. There are some deer in the area, but are extremely scattered. November is the deer hunting month. Also good numbers of black bear. A final note: Our area butts up against the Sun River Game Preserve for approximately 12 miles. The Sun River area holds the majority of the Bob Marshall elk herd with some great bulls.

These Front Range Hunts do not require packing in because they are in close proximity to the game winter range. Horses are used daily plus glassing and hunting on foot. November is the prime rut month to hunt trophy whitetail and mule deer. Elk hunting can be productive when snow triggers movement toward the wintering grounds. I am not talking about deep snow, just a few inches to a foot. Almost all hunters get an opportunity to harvest an animal on these hunts.

These are non-baited hunts using horses and hunting on foot. Some days are spent glassing feeding areas. Approximately one-third of the black bears are brown in color. A unique trophy.

Dave Hettinger Outfitting’s Confidence Guarantee

DHO feels totally confident you will have an opportunity to take a legal animal (elk or deer) on any of our hunts. Anyone who does not and has met the physical demands of the hunt can return anytime in the future on any hunt we offer for 50% of the hunt price plus your guides wages. This is a great offer on a Fair Chase/Public Land hunt.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

We handle 2 to 4 hunters per hunt. Clients wanting the maximum opportunity for success should always consider hunting one hunter with one guide. Keep in mind, mountain elk/deer hunts are physically demanding and game is scattered over vast areas. This is the purest form of “Fair Chase” hunting with no guarantees for taking animals.

Wounded Animal Policy states: If an animal is wounded that we are unable to recover, that tag will be considered filled. The exception will be when it can be determined that an animal has NOT been mortally wounded.

Weight Limit: We have a weight limit of 230 lbs. on our hunts (a 230 lb person equals a 300 lb load on a horse).
